First Bar Electrodes Implanted on Danish Patients
22. April 2024A U.S. patent was issued in December 2023 for InnoCon Medical’s proprietary Bar Electrode technology for dorsal genital nerve (DGN) stimulation. The Bar Electrode will be an important part of InnoCon’s UCon DGN stimulation system. The intention is that patients who experience successful symptom control with the UCon system and InnoCon’s non-invasive proprietary Patch Electrode may elect to have the Bar Electrode placed percutaneously, and so avoid the expense and added steps of applying Patch Electrodes each day or for each stimulation session.
The Bar Electrode is a “permanent percutaneous” electrode, placed close to the DGN. Electrical stimulation of the DGN may enable specific neural mechanisms to help control symptoms associated with overactive bladder (OAB) and bowel disorder (BD).
The Bar Electrode is designed to remain in place permanently* and is ideal for Urge Stimulation (also known as “on-demand stimulation”). UCon’s Urge Stimulation mode is designed to give patients the ability to trigger a short burst of DGN stimulation to temporarily block bladder contractions and give them extra time to find a bathroom when they experience episodes of acute urinary urgency during the day.
A feasibility study of the UCon System with the Bar Electrode currently enrolls patients at 3 Danish hospitals: Aarhus University Hospital, Odense University Hospital, and Herlev Hospital.
With this latest patent, both our proprietary electrode technologies, the Patch Electrode and the Bar Electrode, have been issued patents in the US and Europe. Patents have been issued or are pending in other markets as well, e.g., China, Japan, Korea, Australia, India, and Canada
*Despite being a permanent electrode, it is designed to be temporarily removed by the patient, a caregiver, or a health care professional e.g. during other medical procedures such as MRI.
